Wizard and Toyfare are Gone

Comics Alliance has breaking news that both Wizard and Toyfare magazines have been cancelled, effective immediately.

The Wizard website has little mention of the news, but their link to subscriptions information is returning a "page not found" error.

Sure it appealed to the most uninformed of fans, but I'm a little sad to see it go. My first taste of online comics discussions happened on the long gone Wizard World forums, and I remember chatting with people there and making a lot of friends that I lost touch with as soon as they forums were dumped without ceremony or warning in 2002.

So, Wizard magazine, it was nice knowing ya.

Batman: The Dark Knight Rises Casting

Casting news just came out for the third Chris Nolan Batman movie, as it was announced that Anne Hathaway will play Catwoman in the next movie.

Here's the official report, from Deadline.com:

"BURBANK, CA, January 19, 2011 – Warner Bros. Pictures announced today that Anne Hathaway has been cast as Selina Kyle in Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight Rises.” She will be starring alongside Christian Bale, who returns in the title role of Bruce Wayne/Batman. Christopher Nolan stated, “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Anne Hathaway, who will be a fantastic addition to our ensemble as we complete our story.” In addition, Tom Hardy has been set to play Bane. Nolan said, “I am delighted to be working with Tom again and excited to watch him bring to life our new interpretation of one of Batman’s most formidable enemies.” Nolan will direct the film from a screenplay he wrote with Jonathan Nolan, from a story by Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer. Nolan will also produce the film with his longtime producing partner, Emma Thomas, and Charles Roven. “The Dark Knight Rises” is slated for release on July 20, 2012. The film will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company."

Tom Hardy as Bane is awesome news. Bane is generally a cool character, unless Joel Schumacher get's his teeth into him, and Tom Hardy is a great choice.

Anne Hathaway, though. I dunno. I mean, I'll give Nolan the benefit of the doubt after the magic he pulled with Heath Ledger, but Hathaway wouldn't have been my first choice.

Costumes: Cap and Spidey

Entertainment Weekly delivers today.

Wanna see what Chris Evans looks like in the Captain America costume?

Here ya go:

That helmet is pretty rough looking. I'm so-so on it. I do like the red straps as stripes along the midsection though, that's inspired.

Andrew Garfield in his Spider-Man togs? Gotcha:

Some small changes to Spidey. It looks like he's lost the belt of red around his waist, and the gloves come to a point on the forearms.

Is Cillian Murphy the new "That Guy" of Geekdom?

Tron.
Inception.
Batman Begins and The Dark Knight.
28 Days Later.

What's the connecting factor there?

Cillian Murphy was in all these movies.

Two of the biggest sci-fi movies of the last 5 years (aside from Avatar, of course, which was huge), the best Superhero movies, and the definitive zombie movie of our generation, Cillian Murphy has really made a case to be the new "it" guy for sci-fi awesomeness.

Plus, as my friend Keith puts it, "And he's dreamy."

Seriously, does he just have the best agent in the biz? He's landed some pretty choice roles in the geek film world.

Or maybe he's just a nerd himself. I read once that Christian Slater was a huge Star Trek fan, that he crossed studio lots to get a small cameo in "Star Trek VI", so I suppose it's possible. It's not like his parts in The Dark Knight and Tron were huge, but he was in them none the less.

Looking at his IMDB profile, he's got a few more sci-fi themed flicks on their way to the silver screen. A world where no one ages, A world decimated by disease, and a playwright whose work comes to life.

Sure, he's not Tron or Batman, but Cillian Murphy really is getting his geek on.

  • A group of renegade cops in Milwaukee have decided that they're the Punishers, and are now vigilaties of the scariest variety.
  • IDW comics is running a company crossover event called "Infestation". This event sounds so ridiculous, you won't even believe me. It is a crossover between "G.I.Joe", "Transformers" (been done before, sure), "Star Trek" (what?) and "Ghostbusters" (what what?). It is also about a trans-dimensional zombie plague. Yup. Zombies.

A New Look

To celebrate the new year, and to kick off the 5th year of this blog, I've decided to redesign the whole look of the blog.

I think it's a sleeker look, a bit sexier, and after 4 years, it was time for a bit of a refresh around these parts, don't you think?

How the site looked in 2007

Thank you to everyone who kicks around reading these posts. May the New Year bring you joy and serenity.

On to 2011!
